Within the framework of Ain Shams University's interest in contemporary society issues and contributing to building society and activating the role of scientific research in solving the problems of the Egyptian and Arab society, Prof. Dr. Noha Samir Dunya, Dean of the Institute of Environmental Studies and Research at Ain Shams University, received Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Ati Syed Khalil, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources And a member of the jury for the scientific thesis for obtaining an environmental doctorate, presented by researcher Hamid Abbas Idan Abbas, entitled: "Assessment of Water, Energy and Food Management in Kuwait" (a comparative study with California - the United States and Ningxia - China)
Professor Noha Dunia, Dean of the Institute, stated that the representation of the mutual relationship between water and energy suppliers is a matter of great importance through its effects on food security and the environment, as energy is the main consumer of water, and different energy sources in turn require the provision of different quantities of water.
On the other hand, water production, treatment and transportation require energy use, and there is a great correlation between global trends in energy and water consumption, as there are worrying expectations for the future in terms of increased consumption and less availability of resources, so the nature of the relationship between water and energy requires an adequate awareness of this topic in order to secure support for planning for the future.
Researcher Hamid Abbas emphasized during the discussion of his scientific thesis that water, energy and food are vital resources for human well-being and social and economic development. These resources are closely linked, and the provision of abundant and clean water sources requires energy. Likewise, food production needs water and energy, and the relationship between Water, energy and food as "the relationship between water, energy and food."
The water, energy and food nexus approach has been widely recognized, which is foolproof and preserves the achievement of water, energy and food security.
Researcher Hamid Edan explained that California (USA), Ningxia (China) and Kuwait have made great efforts to secure water, energy and food to meet social and economic needs. The increase in population, social and economic growth and the growth of lifestyle have led to a significant increase in the demand for fresh water to meet these mounting demands, and given the limited natural water resources, the government in California and Kuwait has resorted to unconventional water sources, such as desalinated water, to meet water needs in the domestic, agricultural and industrial sectors.
However, continuing to meet the needs of these sectors at current rates through the expansion of desalination plants will increase the economic burden and lead to negative environmental impacts, which will exacerbate the situation further due to the lack of comprehensive long-term policies and strategies for water, energy and food in the domestic, agricultural and industrial sectors that must be based on considerations of an interconnected approach, rather than focusing on the approach currently practiced.
The committee overseeing the doctoral thesis included Prof. Dr. Sayed Mahmoud El-Sayed El-Khouly, Professor and Head of the Business Administration Department at the Faculty of Business, Ain Shams University, and Dr. Mishari Al-Harbi, Assistant Professor and Dean of Student Roads Affairs at the College of Life Sciences, Kuwait University. Amr Mohamed Ahmed Awad, Professor of Business Administration, Faculty of Business, Ain Shams University
After completing the discussion and granting the researcher the academic degree, Prof. Dr. Noha Samir Dunia honored the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources and gave him the institute’s shield.
