Ain Shams University won the fifth place in the 2021 Seismic Design Competition (SDC), and it also won the award for the best design for an earthquake-resistant skyscraper model from a structural and practical point of view, which is organized by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) every year, and the international competition was held with the participation of more of 30 teams.
The international competition was held with the participation of more than 30 teams from universities in the USA and other universities from all over the world. Each team participated in designing a model of a balsa wood skyscraper, which will be tested on a vibrating table.
Participants in the competition were evaluated by a jury comprising specialists in the field from several universities, where each team reviewed its design orally, in addition to submitting a poster with a summary of the model, and its engineering design. The evaluation criteria included measuring the ability of the teams to comply with design standards and restrictions, and analytical prediction of performance The model, and the degree of its response during a table vibration test.
The competition aims to promote undergraduate students’ study of earthquake engineering, and provide job opportunities for undergraduate civil engineering students to design a practical and constructive project, bearing in mind the cost of resisting seismic loading, in addition to promoting the activities of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) among civil engineering students and all segments of society. In addition to encouraging international participation in this activity.
