Prof. Dr. Hisham Tamraz, Vice President of Ain Shams University for Community Service and Environmental Development, honored the students of the Faculties of Commerce and Law who participated in the literacy project, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Khaled Kadri, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Dr. Ashour Al-Omari, President of the Public Authority for Literacy, Prof. Dr. Gehan Ragab, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Commerce for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Dr. Islam Al-Saeed, Director of the Adult Education Center, Dr. Amgad Hassan, Director of the Literacy Unit at the Faculty of Business, Dr. Omar Ramadan, director of the Literacy Unit at the Faculty of Law.
Prof. Dr. Hesham Tamraz, in his speech, said that Ain Shams University topped the list of Egyptian universities in the field of literacy, with a total of 21 thousand successful students during the academic year 2020-2021, which is a qualitative leap in the achieved results in line with the value and position of the university at the national, regional and international levels.
He added that Egypt won the UNESCO Prize for Literacy Project for the experience of Ain Shams University, which participated with students from 7 faculties and its units in eradicating illiteracy as many as possible, pointing out that the University Council stipulated that each student must eradicate the illiteracy of four individuals before granting him a graduation certificate as part of the community service provided. From the university to the Egyptian community, and it will be given 250 pounds for each individual who succeeded in eradicating his illiteracy, in addition to contributing to facilitating any obstacles that may face any student who succeeded in eradicating illiteracy more than 4 individuals, whether on the university campus or the university city, and paying university fees on his behalf.
He explained that the number of illiterates in Egypt is about 17 million, which is a huge number that is not appropriate for Egypt, where an illiterate person represents a great burden and does not participate effectively in economic, political or social terms.
Prof. Dr. Khaled Kadri, Dean of the Faculty of Business, thanked the students participating in the literacy project, the General Authority for Adult Education and the Literacy Unit for their tireless efforts in the field of literacy and adult education.
He praised the role of university youth and the illiteracy eradication system at Ain Shams University, which plays a major role in the national project to declare Egypt free of illiteracy, based on Egypt's strategic vision for 2030.
Stressing that illiteracy is a national issue, because of its social, economic and political effects, and represents a challenge to get rid of it, as it impedes development processes, and therefore it is considered one of the most important and most serious problems facing developing countries at the present time.
In the conclusion of his speech, Prof. Dr. Khaled Kadri said that certificates of appreciation will be presented to all students participating in the literacy project from the Faculties of Commerce and Law for their efforts in this regard.
Dr. Ashour Al-Omry, head of the General Authority for Adult Education, said that Egypt won the UNESCO Prize in the field of literacy and empowering the poor in 2008 for the experience of a small village in Ismailia Governorate. The field of illiteracy eradication, thanking everyone who contributed to the system and congratulating all participating students and faculties at the university.
He stressed that the experiment had received great support from the Ministry of Higher Education, praising the good strategic plan and the cooperative work team.
