The Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, held a grand celebration on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the first liver transplant in Egypt from a living donor, carried out by a leading medical team led by Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, Professor of Liver Surgery and President of Ain Shams University.
On this occasion, His Excellency inaugurated the activities of the scientific day organized by the Faculty of Medicine, in the presence of a group of pioneers and experts in liver and organ transplantation in Egypt, the Arab world and the international world, including Prof. Mohamed Rala, President of the International Society for Liver Transplantation, Professor of Liver Transplant Surgery and Pediatric Transplantation in the United Kingdom, India, Prof. Alvia Boalo, Professor of Liver Transplantation at the University of Lyon in France, Professor Hiroshi Dutt, Professor of Lung Transplant and Thoracic Surgery in Japan, and Professor Magdi Attia from England Prof. Dr. Hani Dabbous, Professor of Endoscopy and Liver and Liver Transplant Consultant at Ain Shams University, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Bahaa Professor of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Pancreas and Biliary Ducts and Liver Transplant, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Fathi, Professor of Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Biliary Tract Surgery and Liver Transplant and Prof. Dr. Iman Fawzy Montaser, Liver Transplant Consultant at the Organ Transplant Center at Ain Shams University, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Ashraf Omar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Shahira Samir, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and Prof. Dr.. Ali Al-Anwar, Executive Director of University Hospitals, Prof. Dr. Tarek Youssef, Deputy Executive Director of University Hospitals, Prof. Dr. Samia Abdo, Deputy Executive Director of University Hospitals and Director of Infection Control, and Prof. Dr. Walid Anwar, Director of Ain Shams Specialized Hospital, Prof. Dr. Hisham Anwar, Deputy Director of Ain Shams Specialized Hospital, and a group of doctors, heads of departments, deputies of the Faculty of Medicine and directors of university hospitals.
In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini said that the first liver transplant in Egypt was performed from a living donor in cooperation with a group of foreign experts twenty years ago, and over the past twenty years, the medical team of Ain Shams University has performed 1,500 liver transplants in 3 hospitals: Wadi El-Nile Hospital, Egypt Air Hospital and Ain Shams Specialized Hospital, 460 of them were performed at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital, pointing out that the first liver transplant operation in Egypt was performed by a 100% Egyptian team in 2004.
He expressed his pride in the succession of generations in the field of organ transplantation in Egypt in general and liver transplantation in particular, stressing that everyone who contributed in this field faced great challenges, and stressed that any hospital in which organ transplants are performed is equipped at the highest level, pointing out that the presence of such this type of micro-surgery improves the health work system in any hospital.
He pointed out that Egypt is about to introduce lung transplantation operations, and that the organ transplantation center at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital, in which developments and renovations will be opened on Sunday, September 26, will cooperate with the Japanese side in this field because of their previous experiences.
He added that the Organ Transplant Center at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital provides liver, kidney and lung transplants at the highest levels of quality and with strict international scientific standards.
It is noteworthy that the scientific day witnessed a number of scientific sessions with video conference technology that dealt with the new in liver, kidney and heart transplants, and the prospects for lung transplants.
