The Faculty of Law, Ain Shams University, hosted the third national competition for international humanitarian law, which was organized by the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law headed by the Minister of Justice, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Ain Shams Universities, Al-Azhar University for Girls, German University in Cairo, Minya University and Sadat City University participated in the competition.
The idea of the competition is based on oral arguments prepared by the participating students about hypothetical facts that raise violations of international humanitarian law. The students try to prove the existence of the elements of the violations as crimes while the defense team tries to deny the existence of the elements.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Safi, Dean of the Faculty of Law welcomed the participants in the name of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of the University. Prof. Dr. Abdel Fattah Saud, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, inspected the matches during the competition.
Hosting this activity comes in light of the College of Law’s plan to develop legal education in it so that it depends on the skills needed for the labor market, as well as within the framework of the university’s plan to build partnerships with international and local bodies that support the role of the university.
The competition was attended by Prof. Muhammad Al-Shafei, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Yassin El-Shazly, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Dr. Khaled Hamdi, former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Ahmed Dahoum, Director of the English Division at the Faculty, and Dr. Ahmed Fathi Khalifa, a faculty member The faculty, one of the organizers of the competition, and a group of faculty members.
The competition sessions were presided over by a group of distinguished judges, including Counselor Dr. Sherif Alem, President of the Court of Appeal, Counsellor Alaa El-Shimy, Undersecretary for Human, Women and Child Rights at the Ministry of Justice, Counsellor Omar Mekky, delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Counsellor Zahra Kamal Khaled, Vice President of the Administrative Prosecution Authority. Counsellor Rasha Mahfouz, President of the Court of Appeal, Counsellor Mohamed Sabala, Head of Appeal and member of the Technical Office of the Minister of Justice, Counsellor Sherif Abu Talib, Vice President of the Court of Appeal, Counsellor Muhammad Bayoumi of the Court of Appeal, Judge Ali Moussa, President of the Court, and Judge Rafiq Muhammad, President of the Court. Judge Ahmed Thana, the technical member of the sector, and Counsellor Mahmoud Hussein, Vice-President of the State Litigation Authority. Mr. Ali Al-Badrawi, the legal advisor to the committee, and Mr. Engy, an employee of the committee.
