Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization hosted by Ain Shams University

Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, received Mr. Darren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) at the headquarters of Ain Shams University in the Zafaran Palace, where he presented his guest with the shield of Ain Shams University and a copy of the book "Zafaran Palace", then accompanied by Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of the University, and went with his distinguished guests in a tour to ASU-iHub Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center.

During his speech, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, said that he is very pleased to receive Mr. Tang at Ain Shams University, the oldest university in history, giving a short overview of Mr. Tang, a Singaporean citizen who began his six-year term as Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on October 1, 2020. Before Appointed as Director General of WIPO, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), spearheading the strategic transformation of IPOS to support Singapore's innovation-driven economy.

Between 1997 and 2012, prior to joining IPOS, Darren Tang held various legal positions in the Chambers of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Singapore. In 2016, he was awarded the Public Administration Medal by the Prime Minister's Office in Singapore for outstanding efficiency and competence in serving his country.

   
   

Darren Tang is a graduate of the National University of Singapore (LLB, honors) and Georgetown University Law Center (LLM, honors), and attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. He is fluent in both English and Chinese.   

El-Meteini stressed the belief of Ain Shams University that intellectual property will increase innovative research that stimulates invention techniques that will affect agricultural and industrial production, enhance local and foreign investment, facilitate technology transfer and improve the availability of medicines needed to combat diseases, in line with Egypt’s 2030 vision to diversify the resources of our economy and achieve sustainable development goals.

Tang pointed out that intellectual property is a catalyst for economic progress worldwide, not just developed countries, and stressed the organization's keenness to support Egypt in the field of intellectual property rights, which achieves the sustainable development goals of the Egyptian state (Egypt Vision 2030), especially Egyptian universities and research institutions. He praised the Egyptian civilization that dates back thousands of years and its relationship to intangible assets, which recognized the importance of soft powers, appreciating the role played by Egyptian universities, especially Ain Shams University, in developing innovation and supporting researchers to implement their creative ideas, converting them into products and marketing them, as well as communicating with companies. and keeping pace with the needs of the labor market.

Tang added that young people in Egypt represent a large segment of society, amounting to 60% of the population, pointing to the excellence of Egyptian youth in creativity and innovation, stressing his support for startups and entrepreneurs in Egypt, explaining that last June an agreement was signed with 22 Egyptian universities to develop policies Intellectual property, which leads to the improvement of the outcomes of the educational process, pointing to the improvement of the outcomes of higher education and scientific research in (7) institutions; With the aim of creating specific goals for these educational institutions, stressing his keenness to support more Egyptian universities in the field of intellectual property rights.
