Prof. Mohamed Diaa, President of Ain Shams University, inspected the restoration laboratory at the Faculty of Archeology, the scanner laboratory, and the heritage library at the faculty, accompanied by Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, Prof. Hossam Tantawi, Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Bassem Muhammad Sayed, Acting Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and Dr. Nawal Jaber, Acting Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs.
During his inspection tour of the factory, Dr. Iman Nabil, the organic antiquities restoration teacher and supervisor of the laboratory, reviewed the training plans for some undergraduate and postgraduate students in restoration work, in addition to explaining the stages of work and the scientific methods used in the laboratory from the moment the manuscripts and heritage books entered the laboratory and how to deal with them scientifically. Starting from the sterilization stage using environmentally friendly materials, and documentation and examination using UV and IR rays.
The students presented methods of microscopic examination of manuscripts and some models whose restoration had been completed. The restoration team of volunteer trainees also presented models of some of the heritage collectibles they had completed restoration, with an explanation of the work steps of examining, documenting, studying, and restoring each piece and the remaining stages to complete the restoration process.
They also pointed out that there are models that have been restored and are currently displayed in the Zaffran Museum. The work team also presented methods for the safe packaging of heritage books.
For his part, the President of Ain Shams University praised the effort made in the restoration laboratory at the Faculty of Archaeology, stressing that it is an honorable example of interest in heritage. His Excellency praised the work team, which includes several volunteer trainees, stressing that this combines academic and practical experiences, which contributes to the development of Students’ skills and motivation to achieve excellence in the field of restoration.
The university president called for cooperation with other colleges to conduct advanced research on the contents being restored, which contributes to a deeper understanding of the different periods and better documentation of cultural heritage.
For his part, Prof. Hossam Tantawi, Dean of the Faculty, explained that the Faculty’s restoration laboratory is distinguished by its containment of modern technologies and precise standards to preserve the authenticity of artifacts, which contributes to highlighting their beauty and historical value. In addition, the laboratory is a platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences between professors and students, which enhances active interaction in the field of research. In the fields of restoration and archaeology.
