On the occasion of World Population Day, the Faculty of Arts at Ain Shams University organized a symposium entitled "Population Policies in Egypt: Opportunities and Challenges Towards Achieving a Sustainable Future", under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of the University, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and Prof. Hanan Kamel, Dean of the Faculty. In her speech, Prof. Hanan Salem, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development, stressed the importance of the symposium topic; pointing out that population policies in Egypt need unconventional solutions, especially since the population issue affects the lives of Egyptians and has many intertwined aspects.
Dr. Mohamed Farid, Director of the Geographic Information Systems Unit at the Faculty, explained that population policies in Egypt face several problems that affect the demographics of the population and their distribution in the governorates of the Republic, resulting in major social problems such as early marriage, mixing of lineages, and other problems with intertwined aspects.
Dr. Ayman Zahry, population and migration studies expert, member of the National Council for Human Rights and lecturer at the symposium, pointed out that the problem of population growth in its numbers has been known in Egypt for decades, and did not happen suddenly, noting that population growth devours any development and that there is no quick solution to the population crisis and that the solution is to continue to limit population growth and work on successful family planning programs that reduce the phenomenon of "population momentum", pointing out that the percentage of children and youth in Egypt is the highest population group, as the age group from 15 to 25 years reaches 19% and we must transform the population into positive and participating in the development locomotive and not obstructing it.
Dr. Nevin Obeid, Rapporteur of the Population Issue Committee in the National Dialogue, explained that there is an urgent need to discuss the issue and population policies, because they are the core and foundation of development; adding that in order to re-adjust population policies for Egyptians, we need to think about all the dimensions related to them, such as the economic and social dimensions and the phenomena that result from following wrong policies such as early marriage, violence against women, and not allowing women to go out to work. She also pointed out that we need to think about the allocations for spending on development and equal opportunities among the population in different geographical areas.
