As part of the 2023-2024 cultural season, the Center for Middle East Research and Future Studies held a conference on Monday, August 26, entitled: "International Justice and Israel: Implications of International Court Decisions on Regional Policies in the Middle East", under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs and Chairman of the Center's Board of Directors, and Dr. Hatem El-Abd, Director of the Center and Conference Rapporteur.
The conference was held online with the participation of His Excellency Ambassador Ezzat Saad, Director of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Ahmed Fouad Anwar, Professor of Hebrew Language and Expert in Israeli Studies.
Dr. Hatem Al-Abd began the conference by welcoming the distinguished lecturers and attendees. At the beginning of his speech, he referred to the role of international law in confronting cases of violations of international laws and norms, pointing out that the international judiciary is rising up against the Zionist entity for the crimes against humanity and genocide it is committing in Gaza, stressing that there is an international judicial movement. Also he explained that the International Court of Justice is subject to the United Nations, which makes it more neutral, pointing out that the decision of the Court of Justice has a moral and legal value and relies on civil society organizations and the implementation mechanism is subject to the will of sovereign states.
His Excellency Ambassador Ezzat Saad then took the floor, explaining the extent of the pressure exerted by the United States to deprive Palestine of its legitimate and legal right to resort to international law since the beginning of the Palestinian issue until now, until the international judiciary platforms rose up to confront Israeli tyranny and stand behind the Palestinian right, which is confirmed by the indictment issued by the International Court of Justice and the advisory opinion issued by it on July 19, which will have tangible and radical effects, whether in the short or long term, on the level of the Palestinian issue and the Middle East region, which in turn indicates the existence of great hope in reaching a solution to the Palestinian issue and the return of the Palestinian people’s right and the recognition of Palestine as a state with all the rights guaranteed to it by international law.
Following the speech of His Excellency the Ambassador, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Anwar took the floor, where he shed light on the repercussions of the recent decisions on the Israeli interior, and the resulting economic and social effects, especially their impact on the future of the current war government in general, and on Netanyahu's popularity in particular, whose government is facing a wave of internal objections that are increasing day by day.
At the end of the conference, the discussion and inquiries were opened for the participants, and the lecturers responded to all their inquiries and comments.
