An awareness symposium at the Faculty of Pharmacy, on the dangers of drugs and their medical benefits

As part of efforts to raise students' awareness of the dangers of drugs, the Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs Sector at the Faculty of Pharmacy at Ain Shams University organized its fifth symposium within the cultural season for the first semester of the academic year 2024-2025 under the title: "Cannabis (Marijuana) and Cannabinoids: What You Need To Know."

This is under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and Prof. Amani Osama Kamel, Dean of the Faculty, and under the supervision of Prof. Rola Milad Labib, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Khaled Abu Zeid, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Faculty, where he addressed the types of drugs and their health and psychological harms to humans, shedding light on the cannabis and marijuana plants.

He explained that despite the great risks of using these substances illegally, they contain medicinal compounds such as "cannabinoids", which include about 65 compounds, the most important of which is "THC", which has important medical effects, which explains the use of marijuana for some medical purposes under strict controls.

His Excellency also referred to the different names by which marijuana is known in Arab countries, such as bango, zatla and ganja, and explained the importance of spreading awareness among students to avoid falling into the trap of addiction, while explaining the scientific benefit of these compounds in modern medicine.
