The Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences at Ain Shams University organized a symposium to raise awareness of the dangers of the dark web and how to be safe from it under the auspices of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of the University, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, Prof. Nagwa Badr, Dean of rhe Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences, and under the supervision of Prof. Sherine Rady, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs.
Assistant. Lecturer. Amira Samir, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Information Systems, and Teaching Assistant. Ahmed Hatem, Teaching Assistant in the Department of Software Engineering, lectured at the symposium.
The symposium included an important awareness presentation entitled “Understanding the Dark Web: Awareness and Safety”. The presentation provided a structural explanation of the Internet, focusing on the deep Internet and the dark web, explaining its objectives and dangerous uses.
Real-life examples of the dark side of these networks were also presented, such as human exploitation, drug and weapons sales, and data and identity theft.
Among the most prominent incidents highlighted was the case of the “Silk Road”, an online marketplace for selling illegal goods using digital currencies, in addition to the horrific “red rooms” in which victims were subjected to live torture online.
In the second part of the event, Ahmed Hatem, a teaching assistant in the Software Engineering Department, discussed the topic of digital betting and gambling, which is one of the phenomena that is witnessing widespread spread in the digital age.
The event also discussed the nature and types of digital betting and gambling, statistics on company profits, in addition to discussing the reasons for individuals’ participation in betting, the effects of betting on society, and ways to combat digital betting and gambling.
