Under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and under the supervision of Dr. Karim Hammam, Advisor to the Minister for Student Activities and Director of the Leadership Preparation Institute, Ain Shams University, headed by Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of the University, participated in the activities of the Summit Forum for Leaders of Student Unions in Egyptian Universities and Institutes, organized by the Student Activities Sector and the Leadership Preparation Institute in cooperation with the Youth Leaders Foundation and the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Abuse at the International Youth City in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The forum was opened with a documentary film about the history of student unions in Egypt, followed by a recorded speech by Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in which he welcomed the heads of student unions and their deputies.
During his recorded speech at the summit of student union leaders in Egyptian universities and institutes, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research stressed the vital role played by student unions in developing the skills of young people and refining their leadership capabilities, stressing that these unions are not just organizational structures within universities, but rather effective platforms that enhance the spirit of participation and social responsibility among students.
Dr. Ayman Ashour pointed out that “student unions are not only a tool to express your opinions and demands, but they are also a platform to develop leadership skills, and foster a spirit of cooperation and teamwork, through your active participation in student activities. He addressed the students of the Republic Union, saying that they are participating in improving university life and providing solutions to the challenges we all face,” stressing that these activities are an essential part of the educational process, and contribute to building the student’s personality and preparing him for the labor market and future requirements.
The forum witnessed the inauguration of the heads of student unions and their deputies in the presence of Wissam Khaled, head of the university student union, and Mohamed Mansour, vice president of the university student union.
A dialogue session was also held, moderated by MP Ahmed Fathy, member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Youth Leaders Foundation, with the heads of student unions, discussing the future of student activities in Egypt and the role of the Youth Leaders Foundation in supporting them. It also touched on the general frameworks of a new draft law for student unions that will be discussed in the House of Representatives to keep pace with the requirements of the new republic.
The second day’s activities began with three intensive workshops, where participants discussed ways to develop student activities at Egyptian universities and institutes, in line with the national strategy for higher education and scientific research.
The workshops covered several topics, most notably:
• The vision of student unions in developing current activities and maximizing their benefits.
• Mechanisms for creating new student activities that are in line with the requirements of the new republic.
• Strengthening cooperation between Egyptian universities and institutes to maximize the benefits of summit activities.
• Supporting student families within Egyptian universities and institutes.
• Discussing the best methods for implementing student activities at the level of universities and institutes.
• Studying mechanisms for measuring the impact of student activities on students and the academic community.
Following the workshops, an expanded roundtable meeting was held, chaired by Dr. Karim Hammam, and attended by MP Ahmed Fathy, where the heads of student unions and their deputies reviewed the outcomes of the workshops and presented their visions and ideas for developing student activities, stressing the importance of strengthening the role of student unions in light of the strategy of the Ministry of Higher Education and the requirements of the new republic.
In a related context, Dr. Karim Hammam chaired another meeting with the general directors of youth welfare office at Egyptian universities and institutes, to discuss ways to support student unions and maximize their positive role in serving students, stressing the importance of providing all forms of logistical support to the unions to enable them to perform their role to the fullest extent.
The third day of the forum witnessed a safari trip in Sharm El-Sheikh, followed by recreational activities, before the activities concluded with an entertainment party and a sea trip. Dr. Karim Hammam was also keen to take memorial photos with the heads of student unions and their deputies, as well as with the directors of youth welfare office.
