Ain Shams University organizes various activities to celebrate the Earth Day.

Within the framework of the green transformation at Ain Shams University, the community service and environmental development sector paid great attention to Earth Day by organizing several events that lasted over a week at Ain Shams University and its faculties.

Illumination of the Zafaran Palace

Several events were held at the university to celebrate the World Earth Day, which corresponding to April 22, including lighting the Zafaran Palace, the headquarters of the university administration in green, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm for three consecutive days from April 20 to 22.

         
   
         

Planting trees

The events included planting trees on the campus of Ain Shams University and the surroundings of the campus, in addition to aesthetically trimming trees in the university and the university surroundings, where Prof. Dr. Hesham Tamraz planted a number of trees on the university campus, while Prof. Dr. Gehan Ragab, Advisor to the Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, provides guidance to students on how to rationalize electricity consumption, use electricity-saving devices, conserve energy in general, and how to preserve the environment, rationalize water consumption, and use environmentally friendly products.

Films related to the rationalization of (water - energy) consumption were also broadcasted on the internal screens of the university campus, and on social media.

         
   
         

Sports marathon

Among the activities organized by the sector, a sports marathon was held under the slogan “No to Smoking”. The students participating in the marathon raised banners of the slogan “No to Smoking” and wore T-shirts bearing the slogan donated by the Ministry of Health and Population with the participation of Prof. Dr. Hesham Tamraz, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development.

Awareness seminars

The events included organizing awareness seminars by university faculties for students, staff, faculty members and the teaching assistants on the importance of preserving the environment and climate changes, to raise their awareness about the climate change file and the various ways that contribute to confronting the negative effects resulting from it and ways to reduce them under the name “Green University” with the aim of stimulating the university community to assume social responsibility and support the environment.

   
   

Activating the environmental role

On her part, Prof. Dr. Gehan Ragab said that the events aim to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the environment, activating the university’s role in preserving it, raising the level of social responsibility and contributing to reducing environmental pollution.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, stressed the university's constant keenness to activate its environmental and societal role, noting that the Earth Day celebration activities came to urge students to preserve the environment and raise the level of social responsibility of the university community towards the environment, and contribute to reducing environmental pollution. He added that the activities included the expansion of green spaces, afforestation and improvements.

         
   
         

Faculties Activities

In celebration of this day, the Faculty of Archeology carried out many activities. The Department of Environmental Projects and Community Service at the Faculty of Archeology announced a photography competition entitled “My lens to green.” The competition requires photographing the gardens scattered on the campus and selecting any natural cadre of flowers or trees on the campus.

         
   
         

The Faculty of Archeology also launched the "Be Environmentally Friendly" initiative, where the day began with members of the administration giving awareness speeches to introduce Earth Day and the need to preserve the environment and the need to pay attention to recycling.

   
   

The Faculty distributed awareness brochures, announcing the imminent announcement of environmental competitions on the art of recycling, and others for photography concerned with photographing nature to enhance the artistic sense of students and attract their interest to the landscapes and trees scattered inside the campus, and the formation of a team of students “Friends of the Environment Team” practicing environmental culture and doing spreading environmental awareness in the community.

Ain Shams University still highlights the interest in green transformation, and is keen to be proactive in preserving the environment and combating pollution.
