The Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the Faculty of Nursing, Ain Shams University, organized a celebration of the World Diabetes Day, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Metini, President of the University, and Prof. Dr. Hesham Tamraz, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and Prof. Dr. Sahar Moussa, Dean of the Faculty, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hayam Refaat, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Fatima Mahrous and Prof. Dr. Nema Fathy, and in the presence of faculty members and students from all academic teams, the intensive program, the Technical Institute of Nursing, and the Faculty staff.
Prof. Dr. Sahar Mousa confirmed the Faculty's keenness on the cooperation of Faculty students with students of the Technical Institute of Nursing to acquire and exchange knowledge and keep abreast of all internal and external medical events in light of the application of preventive measures against the emerging corona virus
She pointed to the need to educate the community about diabetes due to the recent increase in the number of diabetes patients, which was not limited to adults only, but the percentage became very large in children and young people. Dr. Sahar stressed on the importance of measuring blood sugar and pressure periodically, so early detection of these diseases is better.
Prof. Dr. Hayam Refaat stated that a diabetic patient must coexist with the disease and be able to control it through the 3 basic security themes (proper nutrition, exercise, and taking the appropriate medication regularly) and anyone can regulate their blood sugar level if they change their lifestyle.
It is worth noting that on the sidelines of the celebration, an awareness convoy for diabetes was organized inside the college campus to measure blood pressure and random sugar for male and female students, college staff and faculty members, and to explain how to deal with diabetes cases, its causes, risks, symptoms and how to treat it, as well as how to deal with cases of hypoglycemia, which is one of the most serious complications, which may lead to death if not dealt with quickly.
In addition to providing psychological counseling on the impact of life stress and its relationship to diabetes, advice on proper nutrition for diabetics, the definition of insulin and the importance of exercise in reducing the proportion of insulin in the blood. Publications were also distributed on the most prominent foods and drinks that reduce high blood pressure.
Several seminars were also held during the day, the first of which revolved around guidelines for diabetic foot care to prevent diabetic foot and its potentially painful and dangerous complications. It was about diabetic pregnancy, its causes, symptoms, and how to prevent it and deal with it in order to avoid its continuity after childbirth.
