It is worth noting that the International Day for Biological Diversity expresses the living tissue that makes up the planet and that determines human well-being in the present as well as in the future. Therefore, the rapid decline that affects it would pose a threat to nature and humans alike.

According to reports issued in 2018 by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Forum on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the global drivers of biodiversity loss are climate change, the spread of harmful gases, overexploitation of natural resources, pollution and urbanization.

In order to limit this decline, it is necessary to make a change in the role that individuals play, their practices and their relationships with biodiversity.

UNESCO, accompanied by Member States and their peoples, seeks to exert efforts to reduce losses to biodiversity by showing signs of understanding and appreciation for their work on the one hand, and protecting and using biodiversity in a sustainable manner on the other.
