As part of the celebration of the Faculty of Medicine at Ain Shams University on the International Arthritis Day, the faculty organized an awareness seminar for the staff and workers in the faculty, the university and its affiliated Facultys about arthritis problems and methods of prevention, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, Prof. Dr. Ghada Farouk, acting deputy The President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, Prof. Dr. Osama Mansour, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Hala Suwaid, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, during which Prof. Dr.. Sahar Fathy, Professor of Rheumatology and Natural Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Samia Ahmed Abdel Rahman, Professor of Geriatrics and Life Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Cairo.
Prof. Dr. Hala Suwaid said that every year on the twelfth of October, the world celebrates World Arthritis Day, an annual date to remind the dangers of the disease and its primary signs of prevention.
Prof. Dr. Sahar Fathi, Professor of Rheumatology and Natural Medicine at the university, during the lecture, the definition of knee roughness, explaining the nature of the disease, its symptoms and causes, including genetic causes, weight gain, repetitive stress and injuries.
She pointed out that there are degrees of knee roughness, the first stage in which pain occurs with excessive effort, and with the development of the condition, pain occurs with walking, and the third stage there is swelling and pain and medical intervention and physical therapy are required, and the fourth stage requires surgical intervention or injections, as she presented pictures It shows the different stages of the development of knee roughness, indicating that the main goal of treatment is to get rid of the symptoms associated with the roughness and help the person to practice his life activities normally.
Also Prof. Dr. Sahar Fathi dealt with ways to prevent knee roughness, the first of which is maintaining the appropriate weight, exercising, using seats of the appropriate height, not overeating and staying away from fast food.
Prof. Dr. Samia Ahmed Abdel Rahman, Professor of Geriatrics and Age Sciences at the University’s Faculty of Medicine, said that there are different types of arthritis, pointing out that a doctor should be consulted when there is pain in the joints, not all joint pain is considered roughness, stressing that early intervention limits the exacerbation of the disease, stressing that the importance of spreading health culture and urging people to periodically check to discover and solve problems early.
She also explained the difference between joints, tendons and ligaments by explaining with illustrative pictures.
Prof. Dr. Samia Ahmed Abdel Rahman elaborated on the common types of arthritis, including rheumatoid, lupus, purulent intra-articular inflammation, and gout, explaining the causes, symptoms, and treatment methods.
At the end of the lecture, the door to questions was opened and all the questions raised by the audience about knee stiffness and muscle tension and others were answered.
