The Sheikh Zayed Book Award, organized by the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, has announced the opening of nominations for its eighteenth session 2023-2024.
The award receives participants in this session within 10 branches, following the development of the “Manuscripts Verification” branch, which includes books concerned with the verification of Arabic heritage texts in a manner characterized by a scientific methodology in various fields of knowledge and heritage, in addition to the manufacture of linguistic and specialized dictionaries.
The new branch joins the original nine branches of the award, which are Literature, Translation, Development and State Building, Arabic Culture in Other Languages, Child and Young Adult Literature, Arts and Critical Studies, Young Author, Cultural Personality of the Year, Publishing and Cultural Technologies.
The works nominated in the "Manuscripts Verification" branch must have a clear contribution to the field of vernacular heritage texts and lexicography, and are characterized by content that constitutes a real addition to Arab culture and human knowledge.
It is also required to achieve a high degree of originality, accuracy, and quality, and to show knowledge of the scientific methodology for heritage investigation and lexicography, and to be relevant to the field of knowledge of the text. The candidate has the right to submit only one work for one of the branches of the award, and the nominated works must be written in Arabic, and it is permissible to run for the award in other languages.
The award receives self-nominations from the authors themselves or publishing houses that can nominate books issued by them after obtaining the authors' written consent.
All nominated works must have been published within the last two years and not have won notable international awards.
The original nominated works must have been written in Arabic, with the exception of the works nominated under the “Translation” branch (whether works translated from or into Arabic), and the nominated works under the “Arabic Culture in Other Languages” branch. Works published in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian are accepted.
As for the "Cultural Personality of the Year" award, applicants must be nominated by academic, research, or cultural institutions, literary bodies and universities, or from three prominent intellectual and cultural figures. While applicants for other branches must fill out the nomination forms on the award's website themselves.
