The Audiology Unit at Ain Shams University celebrated the golden jubilee and the 50th anniversary of its establishment, in the presence of Prof. Salah Suleiman, “founder of the audiology unit,” and Prof. Hala Suwaid, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, Prof. Tarek Youssef, Executive Director of Ain Shams University Hospitals, Prof. Lubna Al-Feky, Head of the Ear and Nose Department, Prof. Wafaa Al-Kholy, head of the Audiology Unit, and a group of professors from the Audiology and Speech Language Unit and the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Ain Shams University Hospitals.
Prof. Wafaa Al-Khouly, Head of the Audiology Unit, opened the celebration by presenting the achievements made in the unit, which is a member of the World Health Organization’s Hearing Forum and participates annually in celebrating World Hearing Day, explaining that the faculty members of the Audiology Unit are members of the International Society of Audiologists, for which Professor Dr. Nadia Kamal was elected. Recently its president.
As Prof. Salah Suleiman gave an influential speech about the vision upon which the Audio Unit was based and the steps that were taken to make the work in the unit optimal. He also touched on the difficulties that His Excellency faced when establishing the unit and how they were overcome with patience, thought and effort.
A wonderful humanitarian video was shown entitled (People in the CORE), which tells how the Audiology Unit has placed the humanitarian aspect of work and serving patients over fifty years at the forefront of its goals.
It is noteworthy that the unit that was established by the distinguished Professor Dr. Salah Suleiman is the first unit to serve hearing and balance diseases in the Middle East as a whole and has provided distinguished service over many decades in the fields of diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing and balance patients and in the field of early detection of hearing diseases.
The Audiology Unit at the Faculty of Medicine at Ain Shams University is also honored to have started the newborn hearing screening project, which was recently applied and circulated throughout the republic within the presidential initiative, which has a prominent role in the early detection and rehabilitation of hearing-impaired children, in addition to establishing a system for dispensing hearing aids through health care insurance which helps many hearing-impaired patients.
On the professional level, the unit participated in establishing the first Egyptian association that includes audiologists in Egypt and prepared many training workshops and lectures for all levels of science students.
The unit’s professors also undertook scientific supervision of nearly five hundred scientific research between master’s and doctoral degrees. The social and humanitarian share had its value and status in the audiology unit, as we enjoy good relations with our colleagues in other universities locally and internationally.
It has also been a destination for students of science and scientific research over successive generations, and the Arab and Western world had a share of the graduates of the Hearing and Balance Unit who received education and support there.
On the occasion of the golden jubilee of the Audiology Unit at Ain Shams University, a high-level scientific conference was held from November 16 to 18, and a number of experts specializing in the field of hearing and balance were hosted. This scientific forum included many discussion sessions on the topics of cochlear implants, hearing aids, and diagnosis. Treatment and rehabilitation of vertigo and balance diseases, central hearing diseases and learning difficulties, in addition to workshops on the latest scientific findings in the field of cochlear implants and hearing aids.
