Mental Health and Well-being…A Seminar by the Women's Support and Anti-Violence Unit at the Faculty of Women

The Faculty of Women at Ain Shams University, in collaboration with the Women's Support and Anti-Violence Unit, organized a comprehensive development and medical caravan. The initiative included medical check-ups in partnership with the faculties of Medicine and Nursing at Ain Shams University. On the sidelines of the caravan, a seminar titled "Mental Health and Well-being" was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, University President; Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; and Prof. Amira Youssef, Dean of the Faculty of Women. The event was coordinated by Prof. Heba Barakat, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; Prof. Asmaa Zaza, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs; and Prof. Hend El-Helaly, Executive Director of the Women's Support and Anti-Violence Unit, under the supervision of Prof. Fayrouz Mahmoud, General Coordinator of Student Activities.

Prof. Osama El-Sayed, Professor of Nutrition and Food Science and Dean of the Faculty of Specific Education, discussed the role of nutrition and the importance of a healthy diet in enhancing natural beauty. He emphasized that diet affects skin, hair, nails, and overall body health. He highlighted that women's nutritional needs differ from men's due to biological and hormonal differences and life stages such as menstruation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. He stressed the importance of a diet rich in iron, calcium, vitamins, and essential fatty acids throughout a woman’s life.

         
   
         

Prof. Soheir Safwat, Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Education, addressed the concept of mental well-being with the slogan, "Be strong... mentally strong... be your own source of happiness and support." She explained that mental well-being extends beyond the absence of mental disorders to include a positive state of balance that enables individuals to live in peace and stability. She discussed key elements such as self-contentment, free expression of emotions, stress management, and the impact of psychological well-being on life quality. She emphasized personal efforts, community support, and the role of the surrounding environment in fostering balance.

She pointed out the importance of psychological skills that enable individuals to face life crises and pressures with flexibility and effectiveness, and explained the extent of their impact on all aspects of life, including physical, mental, and social health, which makes them the basis for achieving the general balance of the individual and focused on the positive state as part of the individual's daily life, which is reflected in his happiness and quality of life in general.

She explained the elements of psychological safety and ways to achieve them, such as emotional balance, psychological flexibility, self-esteem, healthy communication and social compatibility, expressing feelings, good nutrition and physical activity appropriate for the body, developing self-awareness and how to manage stress, and we must not forget the role of the family, school and society in promoting and spreading awareness of the importance of mental health and providing easy and safe support services for children and students within the community.

She stressed the concerted efforts between the individual and his social environment to ensure achieving the psychological balance that enhances a life full of positivity and health, and highlighted the great importance of psychological safety in enhancing the quality of life of individuals, stressing that good mental health is not only an individual element, but rather the cornerstone of public health, professional performance, and social relationships.

         
   
         

Dr. Radwa Ahmed Shaheen, Assistant Lecturer in Nutrition and Food Science, highlighted essential foods for women's health, advocating for minimizing processed foods and excessive sugars, which contribute to premature aging. She recommended focusing on antioxidant-rich foods like berries and green tea and maintaining physical activity to boost circulation and skin health, enhancing both inner and outer beauty.

Dr. Asmaa Mahmoud, Lecturer at the Faculty of Nursing, discussed the relationship between proper nutrition and overall health. She highlighted the effects of anemia on general well-being and provided strategies for prevention and treatment through suitable diets, addressing underlying causes, and using supplements or medical interventions.

The seminar concluded with an emphasis on collaborative efforts between individuals and their social surroundings to ensure psychological balance, fostering a life full of positivity and health. It also underscored the critical role of mental health in improving overall quality of life, professional performance, and social relationships.
