As part of the continuation of the cultural season's seminar series for the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the Faculty of Pharmacy organized its third educational seminar. The seminar was held under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen, President of the University, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Rehab Osman Ahmed, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and under the supervision of Prof. Rola Milad Labib, Acting Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development.
During the seminar, Dr. Sandra Nabil Murad, an instructor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, delivered a lecture titled "Drug Design to Combat Gram-Negative Bacteria." She reviewed two inspiring stories in this field, highlighting the importance of creative and critical thinking among researchers and the role of experimental data considering the rapid advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The first story discussed the innovation achieved by a research group at the University of Illinois, which brought about a qualitative shift in antibiotic discovery by identifying the physical and chemical properties of molecules capable of penetrating Gram-negative bacteria.
The second story focused on how cryo-electron microscopy technology has contributed to the development of drugs that inhibit protein synthesis, underscoring the pivotal role of experimental data in bridging scientific gaps.
The symposium highlighted the importance of scientific research in developing new strategies to combat bacterial infections, with the attendance of several faculty members and support staff.
