A new medical success at Ain Shams University Hospitals... 20 successful cases of transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation

In a remarkable medical achievement, the Cardiology Department at Ain Shams University Hospitals, Congenital and Structural Heart Defects and Pediatric Cardiology Unit, successfully performed two complex transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPV) cases. This is part of the ongoing efforts to provide the latest treatment techniques for heart patients.

The successful cases included a young man suffering from surgical pulmonary valve stenosis, where a new valve was implanted inside the old one. They also included a 14-year-old boy suffering from severe pulmonary valve regurgitation, which prevented him from leading a normal life.

With these operations, the number of successful TPV cases performed by the department during 2024-2025, in collaboration with American expert Dr. Ziad Hegazy and Indian expert Dr. Bharat Dalvi, has reached 20. This is an unprecedented achievement in this field.

This modern technology is an effective solution for treating the Tetralogy of Fallot patients after corrective surgeries. It helps patients with severe pulmonary valve regurgitation without the need for surgical intervention, reducing risks and providing them with a better quality of life. This technology has proven successful in 95% of cases.

The cost of one valve is approximately EGP 800,000, while the total cost of the cases treated reached EGP 15 million. However, these surgeries are performed free of charge thanks to the support of civil society organizations and charitable organizations, including the Egyptian Cure Bank, WE Telecom, and the Rashid Charity Foundation, which contribute to financing life-saving treatment for patients.

This success was achieved thanks to the distinguished efforts of the medical team led by Prof. Mai Hamdy El-Sayed and Prof. Nerine Okasha, Head of the Cardiology Department, with the participation of a select group of doctors and experts, including:

- Prof. Azza El-Feki

- Prof. Ghada El-Shahed, Head of the Congenital Defects and Pediatric Cardiology Unit

- Prof. Alaa Rushdi

- Prof. Heba Attia

- Prof. Yasmine Abdel Razek

- Prof. Dina Adel

- Prof. Amira Nour El Din

- Prof. Youssef Amin

The anesthesiology team, led by Dr. Omar Sayed and Dr. Islam Mustafa, also played a pivotal role in the success of the operations, along with the nursing and technical staff who provided significant support during the medical procedures.

Work continues in the Cardiology Department at Ain Shams University Hospitals, where the medical team strives to provide distinguished treatment services and perform more surgeries to save patients' lives and improve their quality of life, as part of the ongoing pursuit of leadership in the field of cardiovascular medicine.
