Animal research plays an important role in our understanding of health and disease and in the development of modern medicines and surgical techniques. Without the use of animals, we would not have many of the modern medicines, antibiotics, vaccines and surgical techniques that we take for granted in both human and veterinary medicine.
Animal research remains a small but vital part of the quest for new medicines, vaccines and treatments for humans and animals. Alternative methods are gradually being phased in, but, until we have sufficient reliable alternatives available, it is important that organizations that use animals in research maintain the public’s trust in them. By providing this level of information about the numbers of animals used, and the experience of those animals, as well as details of the medical breakthroughs that derive from this research
About Us
Vision
To be a pioneer and a model center in providing quality laboratory animal care , and excellent services to support biomedical research
Objectives
* Construct a state of the art newly designed building with a controlled environment to assure the standard humane care and well-being of the animals
* Implement a comprehensive animal care that follow the international guideline Ethical Conduct in the Care and Use of Animals in Research
* Breed special animal strains specially those used for induction of cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases
* Collaborate with the other internal units to create our own projects
* Conduct different animal researches with high impact value
Provided services:
* Provides laboratory animals breeding facilities.
* Housing mice, rats, hamsters and rabbits for many researchers in different faculties.
* Many services are conducted by the unit for example; Introduction of medicines by different route to the animals to treat infectious and non-infectious diseases, observing and caring for animals during the experiment, taking different required samples either blood or tissue
* Surgical intervention is performed in a well-equipped theater by a qualified vet, on various species of small animals, such as albino mice, albino rats, New Zealand and Indian rabbits. The guidelines of ethics for scientific research are followed as regards the use of anesthetics in specific doses and animal care with analgesics and various antibiotics whether it is local or general
* Conduct Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamics studies in different animal species.
* Conduct Safety and Toxicity studies for new drug molecules.
* Induce different animal models of diseases.
* Workshops were conducted for training of medical students on all types of animal injection methods and how- to take blood and tissue samples
Infrastructure (photos)
• 4 animal holding rooms
• 1 procedure room
• 1 operations room
*All rooms are air conditioned and well ventilated
