Biography

• 2001, graduated from Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain Shams University with Excellence with Honor. • 2001-2007, I worked as teaching assistant in Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain Shams University then, I got my Master’s degree in 2006 on diabetic cardiovascular complications. • 2011, I got my Ph.D. on glioblastoma cancer stem cells where I joined Sadhan Majumder's lab in Genetics Department, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA from 2008 through 2010 as part of Joint Supervision scholarship from Egyptian Government. • 2014, I managed to get a Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship for nine months in M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, doing more research on brain tumor. • 2017, I go promoted to Associate Professor and joined Faculty of Pharmacy, the British University in Egypt as Associate Professor of Biochemistry on secondment. • November 2019 till May 2023, Director of the Center for Drug Research and Development (CDRD), Faculty of Pharmacy, The British University in Egypt. • May 2023 till current, Drug Research and Development Group Leader, under the Health Science Center of Excellence, The British University in Egypt. • I have 26 publications in Scopus indexed journals with decent impact factors and h-index 12, almost 430 citations as of October 2023, in addition, to a book chapter. • Also, I have participated in many national and international conferences, supervised a lot of Master and Ph.D. theses and undergraduate graduation projects in Ain Shams University, Cairo University, Suez Canal University and The British University in Egypt. Research interests I. Stem cell biology After my Ph.D., I returned home to Egypt, where I established a stem cell line of research in 2 universities. We managed to isolate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from umbilical cord (in Ain Shams University) and adipose tissue (in The British University in Egypt). We are interested in the isolation of mesenchymal stem cells from different sources including umbilical cord, bone marrow and adipose tissue. Consequently, we are examining the differentiation of these cells into different lineages with special interest in the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into insulin producing cells for diabetes treatment and osteocytes for bone disease therapy. Our overall aim is to study how to improve the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cell into other cell types both in-vitro and in-vivo for better cell therapy outcomes of different diseases. II. β-cell dysfunction and Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in diabetes mellitus (DM) We are interested in studying the β-cell dysfunction as a major determinant of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. We tried to measure some biochemical markers that closely reflect the β-cell function to be used as clinical markers of β-cell status in diabetic patients of different types of diabetes. In addition, we are examining the association of SNPs of various players in DM and their association with developing DM, glycemic control and/or diabetes complications. III. Cancer The other discipline we are working on is Cancer, especially cancer stem cells. Having my training in M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre Genetic Department through my Ph.D. and Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship, I was trained on studying these cells. Currently, we are working on cancer stem cells isolated from breast cancer cell lines and study some target genes. Also, we are isolating exosomes from colon rectal cancer (CRC) patients’ serum and study their diagnostic and prognostic roles in CRC.
